Google engineers are working on improving image classification and speech recognition by Artificial Neural Networks. What does it mean? In simple language, they are uploading loads of pictures to the mechanic brains and adjusting the parameters until it knows what it sees. Lately on the web there was a big commotion about one of the photos generated this way. |
looks like some abstract art, doesn't it?
Well, there is more where it came from, and I am going to try to explain how it was generated.
Process of learning for the artificial neural network is complicated. Basically All that the network has, are millions of pictures. It's up to the program to decide what are the essentials of the object that its learning to recognize, and what are not. Google engineers gave us an example of what they want the computer to know about the fork.
"a fork needs a handle and 2-4 tines, a fork can be any shape, size, color or orientation"
All right... the dumbbells are there, but since the AI has seen the pictures of them always in company of a bulky arm, it decided that an arm is essential information attached to a dumbbell. Seems quite logical if you ask me.
The creepy abstract images are the way that the neural network perceives the world. For example, it was asked to look for animals and was shown a photo of the clouds, the program over-interpreted the shapes spat out this as the result

Here are some more Google-skynet interpretations of the world:
The whole thing reminds me of the adaptive learning AI that was created to learn how to beat the first level of Super Mario world starring from knowing completely nothing about playing the game. Like it? Don't hesitate to share, comment and follow me on Facebook and Twitter. Meanwhile I will go and play some games, before google learns how to do it better. Godspeed, Goblin Source | |
