As you may know I am a big fan of indie games and it makes me more than happy to be able to recommend one for you even, if it is still a work in progress, so after getting in touch with the wonderful and helpful people from development team of Blacksea Odyssey, I decided that they deserve some publicity for their hard work. Imagine that you are an old fisherman with a long grey beard who's lifetime goal is to get to the biggest of creatures and kill them with spears and harpoons. Does it seem cool enough? |
What if I told you it all takes place in space and the fish you are hunting down are crystallized creatures who shoot you back with spikes and shards... oh, and you use a surfing board as your ship.
Blacksea Odyssey is a 2D top down shoot em up. Your goal is to seek and kill bigger and bigger deadly space fish and ultimately find the titan-fish at the edge of galaxy. Your weapons of choice are spears and harpoons. The spears are used to hunt down schools of not so friendly swordfishes, puffers etc, while the harpoon you use mainly to dismember the bigger guys from crystallized shield-like structures and shoot them in the soft and fleshy parts.
I admit, it would get really old really quickly to throw you old wooden spear at monsters, but have no fear! The developers are no fools and they have a solution for that as well, and this particular solution's name is runes. Runes are a peculiar way of upgrading your gear. Each rune represents an ability/skill that will be helpful for you on your endless hunt. Some of them make your throw more spears, some makes you faster, other makes your shots a trail of flames. On top of that you can combine the runes to find a combination that will suit your game style. |
The game is in advanced prototype phase, but for me the graphics look hella neat and even though the trial version I played offered only a "sneak-peak" of the developers vision, I admit I had a lot of fun, trying out different run combinations and trying different tactics and strategies to kill the big fish boss. The only thing I kind of wished was there was some background music, but well... it's called a trial version for a reason.
I think that it's an impressive work, especially considering that the team is just three guys working on they dream, consulting the fans about they want to see in it, and putting their whole hearts in developing the game. Huge kudos for that, and keep up with the good work.
